Romain Jerome Replica Watches Coming Out of the Bl

With major websites going dark to protest the looming SOPA legislation this week, it’s a good time to note that another of the nation’s hottest technology issues is quickly moving from push to shove, complete with accusations of double-dealing government agencies and conflicts of interest.

At first, the ongoing controversy over an effort to solve America’s looming spectrum crunch looks like some sort of Republican blue-sky, free-market scenario: a private firm backed by a longtime GOP campaign contributor puts tens of billions of dollars into a solution (and launches a satellite), goes through 8 years of regulatory process beginning under George W. Bush Romain Jerome Replica Watches, signs agreements with 35 partners and is poised to create real competition in the wireless marketplace while also creating thousands of jobs.

It should be a Republican case study of private sector infrastructure. Instead, it turns out that some powerful Republicans in some agricultural states have supporters who have been poaching into the spectrum LightSquared owns and intends to use for a new nationwide broadband network. Essentially, they’ve been trespassing on LightSquared’s property for years and are now upset at being evicted. As a result, the new system causes issues for the GPS system — the positioning network uses some of the LightSquared spectrum to improve accuracy.

To understand just how ridiculous this is, you have to understand that the LightSquared initiative is a game changer. It builds on the satellite network already familiar to boaters and first responders to create a national wireless network with no dead zones — if you have access to the American sky, you have access to your phone and the Internet.

Enter the politics.

While LightSquared now says it has fixed most of the GPS interference problems, including issues with “high precision” GPS devices , the GPS industry said “no way,” and — finding that perhaps the FCC was not buying the story — spent millions to expand the debate into Congress and anywhere else it could find, like the Department of Defense.

The gloves came off this week when LightSquared said that some government testing by the nation’s Air Force Space Command on behalf of a committee looking into the issue was “rigged by manufacturers of GPS receivers and government end users to produce bogus results, and revealed details of the testing to document its accusations.”

The company also called out conflicts of interest asking,”Isn’t it a violation of conflict of interest laws for representatives of GPS manufacturers to sit on the PNT advisory board and play a central role in its consideration of LightSquared when those companies are actively lobbying on the same issue?”

Senior executives of the company also went very public this week, holding a call with reporters to outline how they feel “GPS industry insiders and government end users manipulated the latest round of tests to generate biased results.”

The call included regulatory heavyweight, Edmond Thomas, former chief engineer at the FCC, who was on hand to explain “how fair and accurate testing should be conducted.”

LightSquared argues the tests used select devices and random power levels chosen to ensure failure, and that’s why there’s no transparency and why the company’s own independent lab results are being ignored.

As a legislator from a rural state, this tennis match between sides is immensely frustrating. In Maine Breitling Replica Watches, we used Recovery Act funds to invest in the Three Ring Binder project that is bringing broadband to parts of the state that did not have it. But there are still places that need broadband for businesses to compete, their kids to learn and to bridge a very real digital divide.

It’s time to end the political theatre and put the discussion squarely back where it belongs: solving the physics problem. The “he said-she said” match may produce great headlines, but leaves real people and real businesses facing a spectrum-induced blackout that makes the SOPA protest look convenient.

Replica franck muller watches An Opening for Digit

Digital learning is here, if not in every child’s classroom, then in their lives.

But will these tools to help students go further, faster and be available to kids who have the farthest to go?

There aren’t that many opportunities to hit the reset button on history Breitling Replica Watches, but we in our field — expanded learning time leaders and after-school networks — have a chance to prevent that the same kids who always get short-changed are harmed again. As bridge-builders between communities Replica franck muller watches, parents and schools, we can prevent the least advantaged students from getting sidelined while others speed down the 21st Century learning track.

But to do it — to ensure that digital learning rolls out equitably, responsibly and responsively for all kids — we’ve got to be in the game, helping schools deliver what Milton Chen calls “modern learning using modern tools.”

In November, the U.S. Department of Education published a national education technology plan to “dramatically improve teaching and learning, personalize instruction and ensure that the educational environments we offer to all students keep pace with the 21st century,” in the words of Secretary Arne Duncan. (Edutopia published this week a helpful primer to the 124-page plan.)

Expanded school days offer the time, place and conditions to personalize learning, next-generation style. Best practices are in early stages of development, but it’s clear that instruction will be delivered collaboratively. Schools that partner with community organizations to expand the learning day count, among others, on diverse teams of teachers, college students and sports and arts specialists to educate. These schools should train all team members — including parents — in using web-enabled instruction to inspire kids’ best efforts and help them acquire the multimedia literacy skills of this century.

Many online learning entrepreneurs, investors and thought leaders simply don’t know much about the networks that help kids learn not just more, but differently beyond traditional school hours. They’re not familiar with the flexible, multi-talented labor force of community educators who partner with schools in the toughest neighborhoods to give all kids the growth opportunities they deserve.

Let’s help investors and inventors get to know after-school intermediaries as connectors between private and public change-makers. I might start by suggesting that anyone seeking a path to innovation-minded school leaders can look to the 17 New York City public schools in TASC’s Expanded Learning Time network.

And while we all become better-educated about using technology to expand learning beyond time and geographical boundaries, let’s also go to work on the basics. It’s not as well-understood, as it should be, that while some kids have access to every web device and mobile application on the market, many of the kids who attend schools that lack art, music or a gym also can’t get to the Internet from their classrooms. We encounter these problems all too often during after-school activities. Schools have unreliable connections or firewalls that not only prevent students from accessing YouTube or Facebook, but also from connecting to major universities that offer open-source courses.

I’m challenging myself and my colleagues to become more active and organized in helping to shape the next generation of learning. It’s not often we have an opening like this to get educational equity right.

H.K. Central Shop Rents to Boom on Gap, Abercrombi

By Kelvin Wong

(Updates with share prices of landlords in seventh paragraph.)

Aug. 22 (Bloomberg) — Abercrombie & Fitch Co. and Gap Inc.’s expansion in Hong Kong may help push shop rents in the Central business district up almost 50 percent over the next three years Breitling replica watches, according Jones Lang LaSalle Inc.

The U.S.-based retailers are set to open flagship stores on or near Queen’s Road Central by the first quarter of next year. Rolex Group, the Swiss watchmaker, has agreed to renew the lease for a nearby shop at a monthly rate of HK$2.4 million ($308,000), or HK$2,400 a square foot, the second-highest in the city, the Hong Kong Economic Times reported Aug. 18, without saying where it got the information.

Hong Kong’s street level shop rents rose 7.4 percent to a record in the second quarter from the previous three months after retail sales climbed and as more tourists from other parts of China visited the city, according to Colliers International. Chinese tourists to Hong Kong jumped 26 percent to 22.7 million in 2010 from a year earlier, according to the city’s tourism board. The figure reached a daily record of 122,893 on April 30 this year, according to the organization.

“The key to retail is foot traffic and exposure,” said Tom Gaffney, Hong Kong-based national director of retail at Jones Lang, the world’s second-biggest commercial brokerage, who forecasts rents in the area to rise as much as 48 percent over the next three years. In Central, “you’re seeing these international brands all expanding into one core area and that’s going to cause a huge amount of traffic to flood to one location.”

Chinese tourists account for about 30 percent of retail spending in Central, said Gaffney.

Sales Jump

Hong Kong’s retail sales jumped 28.8 percent in June to HK$31.3 billion, the biggest gain in more than a year, on tourist arrivals and low unemployment, according to government statistics.

HongKong Land Holdings Ltd., the biggest landlord in Central, fell 2 percent in Singapore as of 10:42 a.m. local time. Cheung Kong (Holdings) Ltd., which owns the Aon China Building where the Rolex shop is, rose 1.6 percent in Hong Kong.

The growth in Chinese tourist spending, which took off in 2004 when the country’s government began easing travel restrictions by its citizens to Hong Kong, has in the past few years lured global retailers to set up flagship stores in the former British colony returned to Chinese rule in 1997.

Hennes & Mauritz AB, the world’s second-largest clothing retailer, in 2007 opened a four-story shop, its first in the city, on the western end of Queen’s Road Central, about a two minute walk from the planned Gap store. That was followed by Coach Inc., the biggest U.S. maker of luxury handbags, which opened a store on the street a year later.

Gradual Evolution

Central, in the northwest of Hong Kong Island, is home to the regional headquarters of HSBC Holdings Plc, Europe’s biggest bank and also the city’s stock exchange and securities regulator.

Sun Hung Kai Properties Ltd. and Henderson Land Development Co. in 2003 opened an 800,000-square-foot shopping mall in the International Finance Centre complex, the biggest shopping mall in Central.

“In the past decade, Central has gradually evolved from a pure business district,” said Helen Mak, director of retail services at property brokerage Colliers International. “There’s now a heavier crowd even during non-business hours and a lot of that is the result of the addition of a big shopping mall and flagship stores nearby.”

Gap, Abercrombie

San Francisco-based Gap, the largest U.S. apparel chain, will in November open a 15,000-square-foot store at the ground floor of the LHT Tower Omega replica watches, according to Jones Lang. Across the street, Abercrombie of New Albany, Ohio, is scheduled to open a 32,000-square-foot shop in a space in the Pedder Building occupied by Shanghai Tang, a local high-end fashion retailer, Colliers said.

Monthly shop rents in that area, adjacent to the Lan Kwai Fong bar and restaurant district, have jumped almost 33 percent since the end of 2009 to HK$2,000 per square foot, said Mak.

That figure is still behind Causeway Bay’s Russell Street, which has the world’s third-most expensive retail space after Manhattan’s Fifth Avenue and Avenue des Champs-Elysees in Paris, according to Colliers.

Kumba Iron Ore First-Half Profit Rises 40% on Expo

By Jana Marais

(Updates with company comment in seventh paragraph.)

July 21 (Bloomberg) — Kumba Iron Ore Ltd., the world’s fourth-largest supplier of sea-borne iron ore, said first-half profit rose 40 percent after average export prices for the steelmaking material increased.

Net income climbed to 9.05 billion rand ($1.32 billion), 28.11 rand a share, in the six months ended June 30, from 6.49 billion rand, or 20.19 rand, a year earlier, the Pretoria-based company said in a statement today. Average prices for foreign customers jumped 56 percent, Kumba said.

Kumba is looking to expand in West Africa, either through new projects or acquisitions, said Chief Executive Officer Chris Griffith. The company targets annual production from the region of 10 million to 20 million metric tons by 2020, depending on the opportunities it encounters, Griffith said on a conference call.

Kumba is benefiting from demand in China, where it estimates steel production will rise 8 percent from a year earlier in the second half. BHP Billiton Ltd. yesterday reported record iron-ore production for an 11th year Breitling replica watches, driven by sales to China. Vale SA, the largest iron-ore producer, said this month it sees no slowdown from Chinese customers as the country seeks to build 36 million low-income houses in the next five years.

Kolomela, Kumba’s expansion project near its Sishen mine in the Northern Cape province, is “94 percent complete” and will start ore production toward the end of the fourth quarter Rolex replica watches, the company said. The mine targets annual production of 9 million tons by 2013.

Sales Increase

First-half sales climbed 35 percent to 24.1 billion rand, while the volume of ore sold was maintained at about 22 million tons, even as abnormal rainfall affected mining, the company said.

Kumba expects “modest downward pressure” on iron ore prices in the second half of the year, when global crude steel production is seasonally lower. Global production is expected to be 6 percent higher than a year earlier. Full-year costs are projected to rise 25 percent on increased expenses for wages and waste stripping, Griffith said.

Kumba, 63 percent-owned by Anglo American Plc, according to its website, said it will pay an interim cash dividend of 21.70 rand, compared with 13.50 rand a year earlier. Its shares were little changed in Johannesburg trading, 0.1 percent lower at 52.451 rand at 9:12 a.m.

Chief Financial Officer Vincent Uren plans to step down at the end of December “in order to take a break from corporate life,” Kumba said.

Treasury No plans to sell foreign currency bonds

MANILA Cartier replica watches, Philippines – The government has no plans to sell foreign currency-denominated bonds this year Breitling replica watches, but it is looking at issuing global peso bonds and retail Treasury bonds to fund the budget deficit.

National Treasurer Roberto Tan said the government will only issue foreign debt if there is a "compelling" reason to do so.

The Aquino administration raised the 2010 deficit target to P325 billion, or 3.9% of gross domestic product (GDP), from about P300 billion or 3.6% of GDP.

Proceeds from a planned P20 billion to P30 billion issue of retail Treasury bonds this quarter would be used to finance the wider-than-expected budget shortfall.

The previous government, whose term ended on June 30, sold $2.5 billion of global bonds early this year.

From January to May, the Philippines’ budget deficit stood at P162.1 billion, already above the original target of P145.2 billion for the first half of the year.

Bruce Lee’s last HK home may become museum report

HONG KONG, July 3 (Reuters Life!) – A luxury mansion belonging to Kung Fu legend Bruce Lee in Hong Kong may be preserved as a museum, giving belated recognition to one of the city’s most famous sons Omega replica watches, a newspaper reported on Thursday.

Billionaire philanthropist tycoon Yu Panglin had put Lee’s two-storey, 5,699-square-foot town house in an upscale leafy Kowloon suburb up for sale but later changed his mind, according to Hong Kong’s South China Morning Post.

“I will consider the views of the community and different parties. I may consider donating the property if the majority thinks we should preserve it,” Yu said in the report, adding he had turned down an offer of HK$105 million ($13 million).

Lee, who died in mysterious circumstances in 1973, aged 32 Breitling replica watches, starred in such Kung Fu classics as “Fist of Fury”, “Game of Death” and “Enter the Dragon”.

He is revered both by martial arts adherents and movie buffs the world over for popularizing the Kung Fu cinematic genre, and helping usher in a golden age of Hong Kong film in the late 60s.

Despite intense lobbying by fans, Hong Kong has done little to preserve the U.S.-born star’s legacy in his adopted city beyond erecting a statue along the city’s famous waterfront.

“That would be fantastic news because fans and the community wouldn’t have the money to buy out this property,” Michael Tien, a member of Hong Kong’s Bruce Lee fanclub, was quoted as saying.

The government said it would consider the possibility of converting Lee’s spacious home into a museum, taking as a model other memorial sites to global stars, including the Beatles Story in Liverpool and Elvis Presley’s Graceland mansion in Tennessee.

“We think the community would like to see a creative solution that would involve the private sector,” a Hong Kong tourism official was quoted in the paper as saying.

Strict Mediterranean diet offers big health boost

LONDON (Reuters) – Sticking strictly to a Mediterranean diet rich in fruits and vegetables offers substantial protection against cancer, heart disease and other major chronic illnesses, Italian researchers said on Friday.

People who did this had a 9 percent drop in death from heart disease, a 13 percent reduction in incidence of Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease and a 6 percent reduction in cancer compared to those who were not as diligent, their study found.

"These results seem to be clinically relevant for public health, particularly for encouraging a Mediterranean-like dietary pattern for primary prevention of major chronic diseases," wrote Francesco Sofi, a clinical nutrition researcher Cartier replica watches, and colleagues at the University of Florence.

The traditional Mediterranean diet is full of vegetables, fish and healthy fats such as olive oil, and low in red meat Breitling replica watches, dairy products and alcohol.

Sofi and his team reviewed 12 international studies which included more than 1.5 million people whose eating habits and health were tracked for follow-up periods of three to 18 years.

The researchers also developed an "adherence" score to rate how well people followed the Mediterranean diet, a tool they said doctors could use to help improve people’s health and encourage them to eat better.

"The adherence score…could be an effective preventative tool for reducing the risk of mortality and morbidity in the general population," they wrote.

WBC hails Donaire’s stoppage of Montiel as KO of t

MANILA, Philippines – Nonito Donaire Jr.’s spectacular victory over Fernando Montiel of Mexico was chosen by the World Boxing Council (WBC) as 2011’s Knock out of the Year.

Boxing Scene reported that WBC hailed Donaire’s devastating second-round knockout of Montiel in February last year as the best stoppage in 2011.

The Filipino Flash sent Montiel crashing to the canvass in the second round following a counter left hook to the face.

Although the dazed Montiel was allowed to continue the fight Breitling replica watches, he wasn’t able to survive Donaire’s finisher.

Donaire took home the WBC and WBO bantamweight titles following the win.

The same stoppage also earned a citation from ESPN Omega replica watches, Sports Illustrated and Ring Magazine.

Donaire went on to defend the titles against Argentina’s Omar Andres Narvaez last October.

He is scheduled to fight Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. for the WBO super bantamweight crowns on February 4.

Early C-section for full-term babies poses risk

BOSTON – More than half of all Cesarean deliveries are done by choice and more than a third are done too early, putting the babies at risk of breathing and other difficulties, U.S. researchers reported Wednesday.

The study of 13,258 births found that the risk of complications doubled if an elective C-section was performed at 37 weeks, when the baby is classified as full term, instead of at 39 weeks when the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) regards the operation as safe.

At 38 weeks, the risk of complications was 50 percent higher, the researchers reported in the New England Journal of Medicine.

"Even those deliveries done about three days prior to 39 weeks still have an increase in these adverse outcomes," said Dr. Alan Tita of the University of Alabama at Birmingham, who led the study.

Despite the ACOG guidelines, 36 percent of the babies were delivered early Breitling replica watches, and the research may have underestimated the risk of complications.

One reason: the study was done at 19 academic hospitals where doctors are usually more attuned to national guidelines. "The assumption is it may be higher if we looked at private physicians in the community," Tita said in a telephone interview.

Another reason is that the researchers had no way of knowing whether a C-section was done after doctors had performed an amniocentisis to confirm that the fetus’ lungs had matured. If those cases had been excluded, the risk of early delivery would have been even higher, he predicted.

Why are so many infants being delivered early?

"There is usually this sense that 37 weeks is full term. That’s our standard practice," said Tita.

"So women Omega replica watches, I believe, when they attain this gestational age, are tired of the pregnancy, they’re excited to see the newborn and they start asking to be delivered. So I think part of it is the pressure from the patients who want to be delivered and physicians who want to accommodate their patients."

In a commentary, Dr. Michael Greene of Massachusetts General Hospital said the profile of women who delivered early suggests that they were more likely to be eager to have their own doctor do the delivery.

"To accommodate busy schedules and to minimize the chance that a patient will begin labor and require a nonelective procedure when her doctor might not be available, procedures are frequently scheduled just before 39 weeks of gestation," he said.

The study suggests doctors should not wait too long either. The complication rate rose after 41 weeks, "leaving a relatively narrow two-week window of minimal risk in which elective repeat Cesarean deliveries could optimally be performed," said Greene.

Phil Younghusband Football is my priority

MANILA, Philippines – Azkals midfielder Phil Younghusband has responded to actress Angelica Panganiban’s tweet regarding the latter’s stand on his decision to pursue his acting ambitions.

In an interview with ABS-CBN News on Thursday, Younghusband said Panganiban must have misinterpreted the report that he is doing an independent film.

Younghusband clarified that his role in the upcoming movie is his way to promote football.

“I don’t think Angelica probably realized it. The indie film was not me acting. It’s not about me getting into acting or being an artista. It’s about football. It’s about promoting football. Maybe she just misunderstood it Breitling replica watches,” he explained.

The football player emphasized that Omega replica watches, as of the moment, his main priority is really football.

On Thursday, Panganiban voiced out her "sadness" on Twitter upon learning that Younghusband is set to appear in an independent film.

The actress’ tweet was: "Si Phil may indie film? Akala ko ba football player siya??? Lahat na lang artista na. Sad.”

According to Panganiban, it would be better if Younghusband will first devote his time to football before pursuing an acting career.
