Power pole snaps in Sydney P-plate crash

A P-plater and his passenger have been seriously injured after crashing into a power pole on Sydney's north shore Karen Millen Dresses, causing it to snap in two.

Police say the driver lost control of his Toyota Corolla on Ryde Road at West Pymble just before midnight (AEDT) on Friday.

He clipped another car heading in the same direction before crashing into a power pole, and then smashing into the front fence of a house.

The driver and his male passenger, both thought to be aged around 20 Emilio Pucci Dresses, have been taken to hospital with serious injuries, including possible spinal damage.

Police believe speed was a major contributing factor and are urging witnesses to come forward.

Electricity contractors are working to replace the power pole, closing two lanes on Ryde Road.

Japan vows $60 billion to boost IMF firepower

TOKYO (Reuters) – Japan said on Tuesday it will provide $60 billion in loans to the International Monetary Fund, becoming the first non-European nation to commit money to boost the fund’s financial firepower to contain the euro zone debt crisis.

Finance Minister Jun Azumi said Japan hoped Tokyo’s contribution, which will be formally announced at a Group of 20 financial leaders’ meeting later this week, will encourage other countries to follow suit.

Indeed, IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde was quoted as saying she hoped to secure government agreements this week to raise the IMF’s funds by more than $400 billion, about two-thirds of the amount the Fund had said in January it would need.

“I really hope this week we’ll reach the critical mass of more than $400 billion. We are determined to do all we can,” she was quoted as telling Italy’s main financial newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore, though she also said finally sealing the funds might take a bit longer.

Japan’s announcement comes ahead of the IMF and World Bank Spring Meeting and a G20 finance leaders’ gathering in Washington, which run from Friday to Sunday.

“Following a series of euro zone’s policy responses, it is important to strengthen IMF funding and pave the way for ensuring an end to the crisis not only for the euro zone but also for Japan and Asian countries,” Azumi told a regular news conference after a cabinet meeting.

“I am confident that many other countries will pledge contributions to the IMF,” he said.

The IMF, which acts as a lender of last resort for governments, said in January it would need $600 billion in new resources to help “innocent bystanders” who might be affected by economic and financial spillovers from Europe.

Lagarde said last week the IMF might not need as much money as it had thought because economic risks had waned. G20 officials told Reuters the world’s major economies were likely to agree to provide between $400 billion and $500 billion.

“I am grateful for Japan’s leadership and strong commitment to multilateralism, and I call on the broader fund membership to follow Japan’s lead Chloe Dresses,” Lagarde said after Japan’s pledge.

Japan’s $60 billion pledge takes overall commitments to about $310 billion. Euro zone countries have committed about $200 billion and other European Union nations an additional $50 billion.

But the United States, heading towards a presidential election in November in which the country’s hefty budget deficit is a key topic, has said it won’t offer new funds.

Canada has insisted it is not interested in contributing to a fund to bail out Europe, which it says has enough of its own resources to deal with the crisis.

Other economies, including major emerging markets China, Brazil and Russia, have said they are willing to chip in but were looking to get more voting power in return. Azumi said he consulted with Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan on Monday and that there was no gap between the two countries on IMF funding.

Azumi acknowledged it would be difficult to secure commitments from all countries this week towards boosting the IMF’s financial firepower and he underlined Japan’s long-standing position that Europe needed to do more to combat the debt crisis.

“I don’t think Europe has made enough efforts on their own,” Azumi said. “I must urge them to beef up their firewall further. At the same time the world is in need of strengthening IMF lending Karen Millen Dresses, so Japan has been taking the lead in coordinating opinions with other countries concerned.”

Financial markets are showing increased concern about the debt crisis.

Spain’s 10-year government bond yields rose above 6 percent on Monday for the first time since the beginning of December, reflecting worries about the health of some Spanish banks and that Madrid could fail to meet budget deficit targets.

That would raise the risk that the euro zone’s fourth-largest economy, which Spain has said is probably in its second recession since 2009, might need an international bailout.

Dignity for All Creating an Inclusive School Envi

84.6% of LGBT students reported being verbally harassed, 40.1% reported being physically harassed and 18.8% reported being physically assaulted at school in the past year because of their sexual orientation. (Key findings from GLSEN’s 2009 National School Climate Survey)

In our present education times, with high-stakes testing, Common Core State Standards, and new evaluation procedures, educators and administrators are very busy trying to meet mandates that seem out of reach. However, even with all the increased pressures on schools today, a school administrator’s number-one job is still, and always will be, creating a safe environment for all students, which includes LGBT students.

It is a school’s obligation to provide all students with the opportunity to find their strengths and weaknesses, all in an effort to find themselves. There are adults who strongly believe being gay is a choice, when we know that it is not. LGBT students do not make a choice to be disowned from their families, ignored by their friends, and abused by their peers.

Unfortunately, many students across North America spend their formative years sitting in a classroom where they feel they cannot be who they truly are, out of fear of being harassed Karen Millen Dresses, tormented, and abused. Regardless of how many adults may work in the school, those students do not feel safe enough to reach out to any of them, and it is up to us to change that. It is time that we, as educators, make more of an effort to reach out to our students, and it is easier to do than some adults care to admit.

Inclusive Environments

Supportive administrators and teachers can change this sad reality for students by creating inclusive environments where students do not have to worry about being harassed, tormented, and abused. Inclusive environments are fairly easy to start, but because of the fear of community pushback, many administrators will not further causes that may be considered controversial, and specifically safeguarding LGBT students is one such topic.

Teachers are less likely to explore LGBT topics with students if they feel they will not get support from their administrators. As each group waits for the other to make a move, there are LGBT students who are being bullied or dying by suicide because they have reached their breaking point. It is a devastating thought that these young students feel that dying is the only way out of the pain they feel. It’s time to change that and help these students in crisis. Quite frankly, the supports put in place for LGBT students are a net positive for all students.

The first and most important step toward an inclusive environment is through school board policies and student codes of conduct. Those policies and codes of conduct must specifically address that harassment based on sexual orientation and gender expression will not be allowed. The code of conduct should give specific examples of the punishment that will take place if students harass each other based on sexual orientation and gender expression. School board policies and codes of conduct are only as good as the administrators and teachers who follow them, so they must not be ignored.

Secondly, Gay-Straight Alliances (GSAs) should be placed in every school. GSAs involve gay and straight students and are facilitated by one or two supportive teachers. Brown University’s Laura A. Szalacha wrote in a 2003 study, “In schools that have GSA’s, students and school personnel report more supportive climates for LGBT students.” Many schools block the creation of GSAs, which is illegal.

In unsupportive school districts, students and teachers do not feel comfortable forming GSAs, which is unfortunate because GSAs open up the dialogue between gay and straight students and teachers. Due to the Equal Access Act of 1984, a school that receives federal aid and has at least one student-led, extracurricular, after-school club must allow additional clubs to be organized and must give them equal access to meeting spaces and school publications.

Thirdly, a curriculum that explores LGBT issues should be part of schooling. This curriculum needs to be age-appropriate but can be as simple as including literature with same-sex parents or social studies debates that cover same-sex marriage, “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” and other hot-button LGBT issues. Although these issues are considered controversial, they need to be addressed. To leave them out of school discussions means that schools are ignoring the world outside their doors.

Lastly, teachers and administrators need training to understand the needs of diverse groups. There are LGBT community centers, trainers of diverse topics, and LGBT speakers who can help open up dialogue about these issues and help educators meet the needs of this student population. Professional development around this issue and other diverse issues will help foster an inclusive school community.

In the End

In a 1995 essay titled “The Case for a Gay and Lesbian Curriculum,” Harvard University’s Arthur Lipkin wrote:

No one should underestimate the value of teachers’ including gay people when they talk with students about cultural diversity. Just hearing the words “homosexuality” or “gay/lesbian/bisexual” in an accepting context sends a powerful message to young people DKNY Dresses, and creates the potential for a tolerant environment.

Many schools across the United States are ignoring a percentage of their population for a variety of reasons. There are administrators who let their own personal biases get in the way of what is best for students, which directly affects those students. In many cases these students are being abused, and in other cases these students are dying. It’s time to stop ignoring the problem and begin doing something about it. Taking steps to include safeguards for LGBT students is a way to protect these students when they face the harassment and abuse they most likely receive on a daily basis in their schools.

Clark and Montgomery are among unhealthiest counti

Updated 8:54 PM Monday, April 2, 2012

Clark and Montgomery counties rank among the unhealthiest in Ohio outside Appalachia, while counties such as Butler and Miami moved up several spots, according to a County Health Rankings report released today.

The area’s healthiest counties are Warren and Greene, though they slipped in ranking, according to the report. Warren slipped from fifth to seventh this year DKNY Clothing, while Greene slid from eighth to 11th.

The healthiest county in the state was again Delaware, north of Columbus, while the unhealthiest was Lawrence in southern Ohio.

Montgomery County ranked 70th among Ohio’s 88 counties, down two spots from last year, and the lowest of all major Ohio urban counties except Lucas, which was 72nd. Clark County’s ranking improved slightly, from 74th to 71st.

The local county whose ranking declined the most was Preble County, which dropped eight spots to 68th. Miami County, meanwhile Karen Millen Dresses, moved up six spots to 31st. Champaign County was ranked 52nd.

Local public health officials said the third annual rankings haven’t yet accrued enough data to show meaningful changes in the overall health of local counties over time.

“It’s a snapshot, (but) it’s not a very focused snapshot,” said Charles Patterson, Clark County health commissioner.

While major public health initiatives such as a smoking ban can move the needle over time, Patterson said, short-term changes in county health rankings are likely to hinge more heavily on socioeconomic factors that are more difficult to influence.

“We’ve seen some uptick in our economy here, which could be part of the difference in the health rankings that you’re seeing,” Patterson said. “We have some positive energy in the community toward job creation and higher-tech jobs coming in. That socioeconomic trend is one of the most important factors in changing the health ranking of our county.”

Chronic diseases such as cancer and heart disease are the leading killers in Montgomery County, and their impact can be reduced when people take personal responsibility for their health, said James Gross, county health commissioner. “You won’t see major improvements to chronic diseases over a 12-month period,” Gross said.

Gross noted that people shouldn’t read too much into short-term changes in the rankings.

In Butler County, where health ranking improved to 39th from 43rd last year, the overall health of residents has little to do with the care provided by doctors, said Dr. Robert Lerer, county health commissioner.

DKNY Clothes Patriots reportedly sign tight end Da

APDaniel Fells

The New England Patriots have reportedly agreed to terms with tight end Daniel Fells on a three-year deal, according to the Boston Herald.

The Patriots struggled to add depth behind Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez last season after injuries forced Alge Crumpler’s release prior to the season, and are hoping that the 6-foot-4, 252-pound Fells can fill that void.

Last season with the Broncos, Fells DKNY Clothes, 28, caught 19 passes for 256 yards and three touchdowns. Playing for the St. Louis Rams in 2010, he made 41 receptions for 391 yards and two touchdowns.

The book on Fells – who visited Foxborough as a free agent prior to the 2010 season — is that he has good hands and initial burst off the line of scrimmage, but is a somewhat subpar blocker.

His presence could allow the coaching staff to get more creative with the versatile Hernandez. But the biggest benefit for the Patriots will simply be having another abled body player at the position.

Both Hernandez (hamstring) and Gronkowski (ankle) suffered injuries last year, which put a crimp in New England’s two-tight end offense. Gronkowski’s injury came during the AFC title game when he landed awkwardly following a tackle by Baltimore safety Bernard Pollard.

With no other tight ends on the roster, Gronkowski attempted to play in the Super Bowl but was mostly ineffective. He finished with two catches for 26 yards.

This move falls in line with the rest of New England’s offseason, which has centered on building depth in areas of need.

Wide receiver Brandon Lloyd was a somewhat splashy addition Karen Millen Dresses, but the rest of the pack– defensive tackle Jonathan Fanene, safety Steve Gregory, linebacker/defensive end Trevor Scott and wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez – figure to be rotational players.

These moves should now allow coach Bill Belichick to focus on improving his defense, which ranked 31st in the NFL last season in terms of yards, moving forward.

Reggae Icon Winston Riley Dies

Celebrated reggae producer Winston Riley has died, weeks after he was shot in the head in his native Jamaica.

The star fell into a coma after he was gunned down in Kingston on 1 November (11) and he passed away on Thursday (19Jan12). He was 65.

Widely recognised as one of the most successful reggae producers of all time, Riley began his career as a singer at the age of 16, when he formed his own band The Techniques.

They recorded with producers Byron Lee and Duke Reid, before Riley quit the group and moved behind the soundboard to try his hand at beatmaking.

He went on to work with reggae acts including Boris Gardiner and Johnny Osbourne and scored international success in 1971 with Dave and Ansell Collins’ hit Double Barrel.

Riley became known for creating the popular ‘Stalag’ beat and later helped to launch the careers of Buju Banton, Lone Ranger and Frankie Paul.

Riley had been targeted in a number of vicious attacks in the past year (11) – he was shot in August (11) and stabbed repeatedly in another incident in September (11). Police have struggled to establish a motive for any of the attacks and his son, radio DJ Kurt Riley, remains equally baffled by the shocking wave of violence.

He says, “Unfortunately Daddy didn’t wake up so we could talk to him to find out if there was something he was not telling us. He was a straightforward man, who was allergic to hypocrisy.”
